Stamford Home Destroyed By Sunday Fire STAMFORD, Conn. -- A fire destroyed a two-story home on Old Orchard Lane in Stamford just after midnight on Sunday, according to the Stamford Advocate.  The family was home when the fire began but was able to safely escape. Crews battle the blaze for 90 minutes but were slowed by frigid temperatures and very icy conditions, the Stamford Advocate reported.  Long Ridge, Turn of River and city fire departments all responded to the initial call. Balch was born in Boston, Mass. and lived in Glen Rock for 52 years before moving to Mahwah 10 years ago. He was a Mechanical Engineer at Bendix for 20 years and then an Instrumentation Engineer for Stone and Webster Engineering Corp. in New York City. After his retirement, he was employed with Arthur Groom & Co. Jewelers in Ridgewood for 19 years. Janet Tefft, 78, Of Beacon BEACON, N.Y. -- Janet Tefft of Beacon, lost her battle to stage four lung cancer in the early morning of Friday, March 10. She was 78. Tefft was born and raised in Leicester, England, and later moved to America to begin her life. She is survived by her Husband Harold, her sons Mark and Michael, and four grandchildren; Timmy, Courtney, Nicholas and William. Services will not be held in the States; there will be an honoring of Janet’s memorial, with immediate family in Leicester, per her wishes.  In lieu of flowers, Janet requested donations be made to Loros, a hospice center in Leicester.

Driving Drowsy Can Be As Bad As Driving Drunk, Study Says New York State officials are reminding drivers that being behind the wheel while drowsy can be just as hazardous as driving while intoxicated as part of the "Stay Awake, Stay Alive" campaign.
