Publisher, Mets Owner, Nelson Doubleday Jr. Dies At 81 WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Publisher and former Mets owner Nelson Doubleday, Jr. died on Wednesday. He was 81.  Doubleday took over the publishing business that bore his name from his father who had made the company a household name. Doubleday then used his family wealth the purchase the New York Mets in 1980 and built an organization that won the 1986 World Series, The New York Times reported.
