Astronaut John Glenn Dies At 95 John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, died on Thursday, according to multiple reports. Glenn was 95.  Glenn had been battling health issues since suffering a stroke and had been hospitalized in an Ohio State University medical center since last week, according to NPR.  Glenn was a decorated Marine who flew over 100 combat missions during World War II and the Korean War. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross five times. He was 77.  He was born in Scranton, Pa. on Nov. 16, 1939 to John Sr., and Anna (Chichura) Pastorick. He was a graduate of Garfield High School Class of 1957. Following in his father's footsteps, he became a butcher, first working for A&P, and later the Inserra Shoprite Supermarkets. He became a Shoprite Store Manager and was a dedicated employee for over 40 years, until his retirement in 2008.
